Washington, DC, is bursting with incredible spots for elopements, whether you're dreaming of an indoor or outdoor setting. The captivating scenery and stunning architecture create the perfect backdrop for those unforgettable elopement photos. One of my absolute favorite places for these intimate ceremonies is the DC War Memorial!
As a wedding and elopement photographer in DC, I've had the joy of capturing countless weddings at this iconic spot—and one of them was my very own! That's right, I chose the DC War Memorial to say "I do" with the love of my life. If you're feeling a bit overwhelmed about where to kick off your elopement adventure, I'd be thrilled to share my experiences as both a wedding photographer and a bride.
Every Step from the Beginning to the "I Do"
STEP 1 - PERMITS
First things first, choose your elopement date. Once you've nailed that down, all you need is a Special Use Permit from the National Park Service.
This permit grants you two whole hours at the memorial, which is plenty of time for a magical elopement and some stunning photos. When picking your time and date, always consider the lighting. The best light for photos is before 10 am or at sunset. Today's featured photos were taken at sunset, capturing the perfect vibe for the elopement.
STEP 2 - MARRIAGE LICENSE
Get your marriage license in Washington, DC! It's super easy to snag from the DC Clerk's Office. No residency requirements or long waits—it's a breeze!
What to Bring: Just ensure you both have some form of ID (like a passport or driver’s license) and your Social Security number if you have one. That's it!
STEP 3 - OFFICIANT
If you're not opting for a self-solemnizing ceremony (which is totally cool in DC—just the two of you, no officiant needed, as long as you're both of legal age and in the right headspace), then you'll need to find someone to officiate your big day.
This could be a friend, a family member, or even a professional officiant who knows the ropes.
If you're searching for an officiant, you can easily find one online or through wedding planners specializing in intimate or elopement ceremonies. As a wedding photographer, I have a network of amazing officiants I've worked with before. If you want their info, just let me know—I'm eager to help!

STEP 4 - DECOR AND SET UP
The DC war memorial itself is already breathtaking, so you might not need much decor. Consider floral arrangements or a simple archway if you want to add a personal touch.
If you’re having a few guests, you may want to bring some simple seating. But honestly, the Memorial’s natural beauty might be enough.
STEP 5 - PHOTOGRAPHER
Hiring a photographer for your big day is incredibly important because you'll treasure these photos forever, proudly displaying them on your walls! My work beautifully blends editorial style with storytelling, and though I'm based in Washington DC, I cover the entire DMV area. I would be thrilled to bring your vision to life and capture your dream elopement or wedding photos! Contact me HERE!
Why Choose the DC WAR MEMORIAL?
Storied Charm: Say "I do" surrounded by the rich history of Washington, DC.
Tranquil Atmosphere: Enjoy a peaceful retreat that fosters connection and reflection.
Stress-Free Experience: Leave behind the wedding day chaos and embrace unforgettable moments.
Washington, D.C. is a top choice for elopements, but there are a few tips to ensure your day is as magical as you envision. With the city bustling with tourists, it's wise to steer clear of peak tourist seasons, particularly around the Cherry Blossom bloom in late March and during summer vacations. These times can make privacy a challenge, especially since you cannot reserve space at the War Memorial.
Timing is Everything!
Sunrise Elopements: For ultimate privacy and stunning lighting, consider an early morning ceremony.
Sunset Options: While sunset offers beautiful views, expect more visitors around the memorial.
Parking Tips: Sunrise elopements also mean easier parking—look for spots near the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial or use rideshare services like Uber or Lyft.
Ready to embark on your elopement adventure? Take the time to plan and connect with local professionals who can help turn your dream ceremony into reality. Remember, your wedding day is all about you, and choosing the DC War Memorial ensures your moment is as unique and memorable as your love story!
